Fountain For The Thirsty

The other day our family came across a revelation.

Our favourite kebab shop (don’t judge us!) has none other than the Seaside Special on its takeaway menu. Not only is this Seaside Special cheaper than what we usually order as a family - but it comes complete with chips, pittas, salads, jalapeños and to everyone’s astonishment, a giant foil tray with a beautifully presented abundance of each type of kebab meat!

A triumph! Well…until about an hour later, when the thirst-factor kicked in. Delicious as it was, no amount of squash seemed to touch the sides of our post-kebab-parched-throats.

You may be thinking, what on God’s green earth has this woman’s kebab issues got to do with walking with Jesus? Hang in there…

Recently, I was reading Psalm 36 and a little powerhouse of a verse stayed with me. It’s a beautiful picture to meditate on and digest:

"For with you is the fountain of life;

in your light we see light."

Psalm 36:9

I don't know about you - but I can go through real ups in my walk with Jesus. I can also go through seasons where my heart, head and soul get distracted.

At these times, I tend to drift to other things/people/my phone for ‘quick fixes’ - for affirmation, direction, fulfilment, a cure from boredom…something to quench my soul-level thirst.

But as David meditates on the LORD in this Psalm, he declares: with you is the fountain of life.

All of our deepest longings, our deepest needs, all that our agitated and distracted souls really long for– is met and found in Jesus. And this abundant life isn’t measured out in teaspoons… He is a fountain! In Him is endless, refreshing abundance.

Going to other stuff may give us a 'quick fix' but like my kebab…it will leave us thirsty. Same for our friends that don't know Jesus yet.

Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10)

So let’s come to the Fountain – and point thirsty friends to His life-giving streams too.
